Dr CarolWho I Am

I’m Dr Carol, sometimes affectionately known as “Doctor Doctor” to my friends. You’ll see why in a moment.

I help people find the Fully Alive kind of life that God makes available to us and calls us to – physically, mentally, relationally, and spiritually. I help them get past confusion, find the clarity and tools they need, and thrive as they live out their faith with good health, loving relationships, and joyful spirituality. Helping husbands and wives develop a Fully Alive marriage is a special passion that runs through a lot of what I do.

Professionally, I’m a licensed medical doctor with over 20 years experience practicing OB-Gyn and Reproductive Endocrinology. I’m also an ordained Christian minister with a Doctor of Ministry degree from Oral Roberts University. So you can see why I am sometimes called “Doctor Doctor.”

I’m an author and speaker, and produce radio and television programs. From 2009 to 2015 I was the host of the Dr Carol Show radio program, talking with people across the country about connecting with God in every area of their lives. Check out a selection of archives from our radio program and find a topic that’s helpful to you.

I’ve been blogging since 2011. My first traditionally published book is now available here, or wherever books are sold: Dr Carol’s Guide to Women’s Health. My earlier book, Live Healthy, Live Whole, is also available here.

In 2008 God brought me a wonderful gift – my husband Al Tanksley. We’ve lived here in Austin, TX since 2010. He was truly “the wind beneath my wings!” Al passed away early in 2016, and I am carrying on the mission we had been working together to fulfill. When I’m not writing, speaking, creating video products, or practicing medicine, you can find me enjoying the opportunity to be Grandma Carol to four wonderful grandchildren.

This is my “official” site where you can hear from me personally. Unless otherwise noted, I write all the content myself. Most of what’s here is related to healthy living at the intersection of body, mind, and soul. The primary focus is helping confused but committed people of faith find the clarity they need to live well and thrive. Occasionally I also write about healthcare, cooking, or other things.

My Biography

I’ve practiced medicine for over 20 years, and am board certified in Obstetrics-Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology. I have practiced medicine in several states, including Texas since 2005. While I treasure relationships with patients that this type of practice affords, I currently practice part-time, providing short-term relief for other OB-Gyn physicians and hospitals. This allows me the flexibility to devote more time to radio/TV programs, writing, and ministry. I’ve also been regularly involved in training medical students and OB-Gyn resident physicians.

I received my medical degree from Loma Linda University, and completed an OB-Gyn residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center, Loma Linda, CA. I completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology at Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, GA. My clinical practice has included many professional settings, including full-time university faculty, solo private practice, clinic and group practice, large county teaching hospital, and locum tenens (relief work) in several states.

While continuing to practice medicine, I also received an M.Div. (Master of Divinity), and then a D.Min. (Doctor of Ministry) degree from Oral Roberts University, focusing on Christian leadership. I subsequently founded Totally Free Ministries, a non-profit Christian ministry dedicated to helping people discover the Fully Alive kind of life that Jesus came to give us all.

Since 2009 my husband Al and I together produced a regular radio program “The Dr Carol Show” until not long before his death in 2016. You can find many of the programs on our Archives page. I also enjoy speaking to various groups such as civic or church groups, women’s organizations, health students and professionals, and others.

I live in Austin, Texas. Al’s two boys and their families have welcomed me in, and I get to enjoy being Grandma Carol to four wonderful grandchildren.
